'The Knowledge' is our resource for producers that dig original vinyl. The 2nd in the series is 60s Breaks: devoted to breaks found on soul and pop albums from... the 1960s. Think Motown, Chess, Cadet, Stax, all that good stuff.

Nothing beats this drum sound in my opinion. The records that we love from this period were recorded in expansive spaces- Abbey Road, Cello Studios, or the converted cinema studio of Stax. Their sound is characterised by that ambient mic'ing, maybe even some plate reverb- and usually a healthy amount of tape distortion too.

In my years of digging records these kinds of breaks were always the toughest to come by. Every time I found one it felt like a small victory! I know how much vibe they bring to a beat, for example:

Available for a nominal charge*, '60s breaks' is a PDF file with the original sources for over 100 personally-selected, bona-fide 1960s drum breaks.

So you can hear what you're looking for before you head down to the record shop (or if you don't even own a turntable but love samples), when you download the '60s Breaks' PDF you'll also get a FREE bonus download: a folder of all the breaks as .WAV files... try before you buy!

As these are copyrighted recordings belonging to the original artists and labels, we recommend to use them for fun (they are GREAT to play along to for instrumentalists and songwriters)- if you do sample them in music you stand to profit from, then do the right thing and track down the rightsholders.

*We obviously understand the irony of there being a charge for a download that includes copyrighted sounds. We're not aiming to get rich here, it's a nominal charge to help with the upkeep of the site. We hope you understand!
